first check the root of the c drive for a file with the name autorun.inf. However, I recommend turning the visibility of extensions off, as many users might not be able to deal with them. It will no longer operate. Supposedly that will set things right.
- I tried using ShellExView, and there were only two that happened on a date close to when the icons went crazy, and they were both on that date (Nov 15), but
- also they have white squares around all of them...
- If this is the situation, please also try Clean Boot and see if the issue occurs.
- there's still nothing better for a sensible price .They're a bit reluctant in W8.1, but I'm stuck with that cos it came on the PC when I bought it!
- Decrease icon size - Apply.

I listed three things. If the undo is successful you may try using a different restore point for better results.
