I eagerly await your answer. There are problems/complaints posted all over the various Windows forums about this. After reading your blog, I first tried to remove the .NET Framework programs using Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs, but this repeatedly failed with messages indicating other programs were using them. It might help to post a question on the forums at http://www.thegreenbutton.tv/…/viewforum.php to see if someone there has any suggestions for you to try.
I discovered that if the kernel debugger is enabled, Media Center will develop these symptoms. It's a little too expensive to replace 4 computers at my place of business. I have physically uninstalled and reinstalled all of my tuners and drivers, and still media center is unable to find them. And, this window only allows volume & full screen control. The Codec Tweak Tool has the ability to scan and remove broken codecs and DirectShow filters.

As an experiment, you could try to use the steps listed at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/11/25/disabling-services-with-msconfig-to-work-around-setup-failures.aspx to disable any non-Microsoft services and see if that helps with this issue. It should not require a reinstall of the OS. Also, there might be some log files from the Windows Media Center Receiver Service crash in C:programdatamicrosoftehome or in the event log on your system.
