That just means you need to launch it directly from Steam and it will work.

All I can find online are fixes for the Steam version (which don't always work with the Steam version it seems) and they won't work for the CD version. I have the same problem and went out searching for a way to solve it...this seems the only way to fix it until something else is done about it.
